Chardonnay - Sonoma Loeb WinesChardonnay is a dry wine whose grapes integrate the flavors of the environment that they are raised in creating a variety of different flavors within each bottle of wine. The taste of a chardonnay depends greatly on where the grapes are grown to make the wine. When most wines were coming from France, chardonnay was grown primarily on the sloping hills of Burgundy so most chardonnays had the same basic taste as the burgundy and champagne that is popular in that region. However, since this grape grows so well in many different climates and soils, it migrated very quickly to other parts of the world. In cooler climates chardonnay tastes very crisp and is high in acid. In warmer climates the grapes tend to have a fruitier flavor. Chardonnays can also have a buttery flavor, or have a smoky or nutty taste depending on the region where the grapes are grown. The wineries of Napa Valley have consistently won high awards for their chardonnays over the past several years. Wineries have developed techniques to produce grapes that result in a fruity taste that has an acid content that enhances the flavor of the chardonnay. They have also integrated the use of oak barrels in the fermentation process that creates a wine that has an old-worldly taste. Oak barrels are vital to the creation of an excellent chardonnay. Chardonnay grapes integrate with the oak while the fermenting process is taking place. For this reason the oak barrels used for the Sonoma-Loeb Chardonnay are imported from France and the entire fermentation process of the grapes takes place in these barrels. In order for each chardonnay to exhibit the most unique flavor, the grapes used come from a small farm in the Alexander Valley and each bottle of wine is treated as an individual work of art.
